Our safety then depends on the impact strength. In the article we answer the question: what does impact strength depend on and how can it be controlled?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is impact strength?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Impact strength<\/strong> , according to the simplest definition, <strong>is the material&#8217;s resistance to fracture under dynamic load<\/strong> . This parameter is expressed <strong>in joules<\/strong> and determines the work necessary to fracture the sample in relation to its cross-sectional area. Impact strength is <strong>an important parameter determining the strength of polymeric materials<\/strong> due to their application. Plastics are often used in conditions where dynamic loads, vibrations or sudden load changes occur.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How to assess impact strength?<\/h2>\n<p>There are <strong>several standardized test methods for assessing the resistance<\/strong> of polymers to impact loading:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>  1. Charpy test<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n<p>This is one of the more common methods for assessing impact strength. In the Charpy test, a cuboid-shaped sample with or without a notch (&#8220;V&#8221; notch) is struck with a hammer using a specified energy. It measures <strong>how much energy is absorbed by the sample before it breaks<\/strong> . The result of the Charpy test is the impact strength of the sample, expressed in joules.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>  2. Izod test<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Similar to the Charpy test. The method differs in the way the sample is mounted, and the sample is always notched. In the Izod test, the sample is also struck at a specific energy and the result is expressed in joules. This method is often used <strong>to test impact strength at low temperatures<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<h3><strong>  3. Gardner test<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a modification of the Charpy test in which the sample is torn longitudinally. The sample is usually rod-shaped. The Gardner test <strong>measures the longitudinal impact strength of a material<\/strong> , and the result is expressed in joules.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>  4. Dart Drop Test<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In this method, a special tip of known mass is dropped from a specific height and hits the workpiece sample. The energy required to cause the sample to penetrate is measured. This method is particularly useful <strong>for testing polymer films and plates<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<p>The selection of the appropriate impact testing method depends on the specific application requirements and the conditions in which the material will be used. Therefore, if we want to increase impact strength, we should choose amorphous materials. However, if it is necessary to use e.g. polypropylene, it is worth knowing that the atactic structure of this polymer will crystallize less strongly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>The degree of crystallinity,<\/strong> which can be adjusted by changing <strong>the temperature and cooling time of the detail<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the degree of crystallization increases, the hardness, density, abrasion resistance and, for example, tensile strength of the material increase. The impact strength decreases. Therefore, it is important to choose materials that create a less ordered structure if we want to focus on good impact parameters of the product.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>The degree of packing of the material,<\/strong> which depends on <strong>the pressure and pressing time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the injection pressure or pressing time is too high, the polymer chains are significantly packed, which causes an increase in internal stresses, which can lead to greater susceptibility to shock loading. When we face the problem of low impact strength, it is worth taking a look at the parameters related to pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>The geometry of polymer chains,<\/strong> which is related to <strong>the injection speed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The type of material flow in the mold is important when it comes to the directionality of mechanical properties. In the case of turbulent motion (at increased injection speed), we observe a chaotic arrangement of chains, which may positively affect the local impact strength. In the case of fiber-filled plastic, laminar flow may cause the chains to be distributed longitudinally, which will improve the tensile resistance of the material, but will also lead to a reduction in impact strength.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Chain lengths,<\/strong> a feature sensitive to <strong>plasticization parameters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think anyone has any doubts that the negative factor affecting the strength of a material is its degradation, i.e. shortening the length of polymer chains (including shearing), which affects the deterioration of the strength parameters of the detail. Therefore, it is important not to overdo the plasticization temperature, the time the material is held in the system, as well as the screw rotation speed.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>What else affects impact strength?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Ambient temperature<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It has a significant impact due to the significant temperature profile of phase transformations of each polymer. The plastic will behave differently below and above, e.g. the glass transition temperature. It is also important to properly condition the parts before testing or use.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Additives used<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The strength parameters, including impact strength, are influenced by the additives used: fillers, fibers and masterbatches. Additives can behave as nucleants, i.e. particles (seeds) initiating the crystallization process. In the case of compatibilizers, they improve the adhesion between the polymer base and the filler while strengthening the material. However, impact additives act as a kind of &#8220;shock absorbers&#8221;, improving the plasticity of the material.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Surface structure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An important parameter influencing the impact strength is the surface structure of the material.
